Why am I passionate about this?

For years, I was the guy who loved a party and never knew when to stop. What started as having fun with my mates eventually became an addiction I couldn’t control. After a near-fatal seizure in 2023, I finally got sober and began the long process of understanding my addiction and rebuilding my life. Since then, I’ve become passionate about showing people that there’s a better life waiting for them on the other side of addiction. These books resonated with different parts of my own journey, from understanding how to change the habits that were destroying me to genuinely enjoying being sober. I hope they help others see that there’s life after addiction too.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Scar Tissue

Davey Lloyd Why I love this book

This book is one hell of a ride.

Anthony Kiedis is brutally honest about the highs and lows of fame, addiction, and trying to get clean. What really hit me was how addiction could keep dragging him back in even when he knew exactly how much damage it was causing. I know that feeling of thinking you’re in control while your life is slowly falling apart around you.

This book helped me understand that recovery is about continuing to choose a better life, even when it feels hard and messy, and believing you’re capable of becoming more than the person you were at your lowest.

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

In SCAR TISSUE Anthony Kiedis, charismatic and highly articulate frontman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, recounts his remarkable life story, and the history of the band itself.

Raised in the Midwest, he moved to LA aged eleven to live with his father Blackie, purveyor of pills, pot, and cocaine to the Hollywood elite. After a brief child-acting career, Kiedis dropped out of U.C.L.A. and plunged headfirst into the demimonde of the L.A. underground music scene. He formed the band with three schoolfriends - and found his life's purpose. Crisscrossing the country, the Chili Peppers were musical innovators and influenced…

Book cover of Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones

Davey Lloyd Why I love this book

This isn’t a book about addiction, but it had a massive impact on the way I approached recovery.

James Clear believes changing your life doesn’t happen with one huge decision, but through the small choices you make every day. Getting sober was one big decision for me, but staying sober meant completely changing my routines and building habits that supported the person I wanted to become.

Working with my life coach, journalling, surfing, training, and taking time to sit with my thoughts might seem like small things on their own, but together they helped me rebuild my life. This book taught me to stop relying on motivation and start creating a routine that made it easier to keep moving forward even on days when I didn’t feel like it.

The PMA Effect

By John Joseph,

Book cover of The PMA Effect

Davey Lloyd Why I love this book

I used to think having a positive attitude meant being one of those people who pretend everything is amazing even when their life is falling apart. The PMA Effect gave me a different perspective.

John Joseph has been through some incredibly dark experiences, so when he talks about positivity, it doesn’t come from a place of having had an easy life. It’s about what you do with the shit that happens to you and refusing to let your worst experiences define the rest of your life. That really hit home.

I can’t change the years I lost to addiction or the damage I caused along the way, but I can decide what I do with those experiences now. For me, that’s what positive mental attitude is really about.

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

By Joseph Murphy ,

Book cover of The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Davey Lloyd Why I love this book

I really connected with The Power of Your Subconscious Mind because so much of my recovery has been about changing the story I tell myself.

For years, I’d convinced myself that partying was just who I was and that I couldn’t change, and eventually I started believing my own bullshit. Joseph Murphy’s message about the power of our thoughts and beliefs made me realise how much those stories can shape the way we live.

Getting sober meant replacing “I can’t” with “I can” and starting to believe I was capable of becoming a completely different version of myself. This book reinforced something I’ve learnt through recovery: changing your life also means changing the beliefs about yourself that have been holding you back.

Book cover of Greenlights

Davey Lloyd Why I love this book

I connected with Matthew McConaughey’s way of looking at the shit life throws at you.

He says we should look at what the bad moments are trying to teach us and how even the red lights can eventually lead somewhere worthwhile. That resonated with me because some of the darkest moments in my life ended up forcing me to change in ways I never would have when things were comfortable.

Greenlights reminded me that you can’t always control what happens to you, but you can control what you do with it, and sometimes the worst experiences can become the ones you grow from most.
